My story as a beekeeper started 3 years ago. I was born in Plovdiv but grew up in the village of Belozem. My family is farmers and I have been exploring nature since I was little and somehow quite naturally bees poked my interest. The desire to observe them and take care of them was born at the beginning of my higher education. While studying Tourism Economics at the University of Economics and Technology in Plovdiv, I became more and more fascinated by bees and interested in what it is to be a beekeeper. Over the years I changed different jobs, but I never found my place and kept looking.
After a few years of informing and gaining knowledge in theory I felt ready and put 2 hives in my yard. Accidentally or not, a year later I met the Yanakievi family and they trusted me to work together. I now work as a beekeeper on both mine and their apiary, caring for 250 colonies spread over two apiaries. They are located in the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains, where we get a wonderful and delicious forest bouquet of drakes, acacia, linden and forest herbs.
Despite the hard physical work, I love being in the apiary in nature and working together with the bees. It makes me feel alive and free.
For me, bees are amazing. The bee colony is an example of an ideal society – they function in unique synchrony, as a whole organism. As I care for them, I learn and believe that my work is for a good cause.
I know I am still a beginner beekeeper, but I have the desire and enthusiasm to continue to develop in this direction.
